Product Description

What It Is

A reducing nipple is like a standard nipple but with different sized ends. Both ends have male BSP threads. One end is larger. The other end is smaller.

The hex section is in the middle. You use a wrench there to tighten it.

Size Combinations

We stock seven combinations.

  • 1" x ¾"
  • 1¼" x 1"
  • 1½" x 1"
  • 1½" x 1¼"
  • 2" x 1"
  • 2" x 1¼"
  • 2" x 1½"

All threads are BSP. BSP is the standard thread type in Kenya for irrigation and plumbing.

When to Use a Reducing Nipple

You have a 2 inch female valve. You want to connect it to a 1 and a half inch female pipe. A standard nipple would not fit because the sizes are different. This reducer connects them.

You are adapting an old system to a new one. The old fittings are one size. The new fittings are another size. Use a reducing nipple to bridge them.

You need to step down from a large filter outlet to a smaller mainline. The filter has a 2 inch female thread. The mainline has a 1 and a half inch male adapter. Put a 2 inch by 1 and a half inch reducing nipple between them.

Installation

Wrap PTFE tape around both male threads. Use more tape on the larger thread. Seven turns is good. Use five turns on the smaller thread.

Screw the larger end into the larger female fitting first. Hand tighten. Use a wrench on the hex to tighten the smaller end into the smaller female fitting.

Do not over tighten. PVC threads crack easily. If it leaks, add more tape. Do not force the wrench.

Pressure Rating

The reducing nipple handles typical irrigation pressures. The smaller size will be the weak point. For example, a 2 inch by 1 inch nipple is only as strong as a 1 inch nipple. Keep your system pressure within the smaller size rating.

Material Quality

The fitting is made of PVC. It resists UV, chemicals, and fertilisers. It will not rust. It will not corrode. It works for both irrigation and potable water.
