Why Use a Seedling Tray
Starting seeds in a tray gives each seedling its own cell. This prevents roots from tangling and makes transplanting easier. The drainage holes let excess water escape, so roots do not sit in soggy soil. Black plastic absorbs warmth during the day, which helps seeds germinate faster.
Choosing the Right Cell Count
-
50 and 72 holes – Larger cells for plants that need more root space before transplanting, such as tomatoes, peppers, or cucumbers.
-
128 and 200 holes – Medium cells for flowers, leafy greens, and herbs.
-
288 holes – Small cells for very tiny seeds or for starting many seedlings in a small space, such as onions or lettuce.
How to Use
Fill each cell with a fine seedling mix, not heavy garden soil. Press one or two seeds into each cell at the depth recommended on the seed packet.
Water gently from above or set the tray in a shallow pan of water so moisture soaks up from the drainage holes. Keep the tray in a warm, bright location.
When seedlings have two to four true leaves, transplant them to larger pots or directly into the field.
