What It Does
In a drip irrigation system, the sub‑main pipe runs along the field. From it, smaller lateral lines branch off to each crop row. The PE to drip connector (also called a start connector or take off) makes this connection.
One end attaches to the sub‑main pipe. The other end accepts the 16mm drip line or drip tape. The barbed design holds the tubing without clamps or glue.
How to Install
First, punch a hole in the sub‑main pipe. Use a hand drill punch with a bit that matches the connector size. For a 16mm connector, you need a 16mm hole.
Push the barbed end of the connector into the hole until the flange or shoulder sits flush against the pipe. On the other side, push the 16mm drip line firmly over the barb. Push it until the tubing covers all barbs, about 15 to 20mm.
If the tubing is stiff, dip the end in hot water for a few seconds or leave it in the sun. This softens the plastic and makes the connection easier. No glue, no tools. The connector works for both above ground and buried installations.
Pressure and Leak Prevention
The connector seals by compression. The rubber or plastic barb expands against the inside of the tubing.
For mainline pressures up to 3 bar (about 45 PSI), the connection stays dry. If you see a small leak at the barb, the tubing may not be fully seated or the hole in the mainline may be too large. Remove the connector, check the hole size, and reinstall.
For extra security on high pressure systems, some farmers add a small stainless steel clamp over the tubing at the barb, though this is not usually required.
Where to Use
Horticultural and agricultural drip systems, permanent or temporary layouts. The connector can be removed and reused if you reconfigure the field. To remove, twist the tubing while pulling gently. Do not yank or cut the tubing unless necessary.
