What It Does
A reducing coupling is like a straight coupling but with different sized ends. The larger end fits your larger hose. The smaller end fits your smaller hose. You push both hoses onto the coupling. Water flows from the larger hose into the smaller one.
This fitting is useful when you need to step down from a mainline to a smaller lateral. Or when your pump outlet is larger than your distribution hose.
When You Need It
Your mainline is 90mm layflat. You want to feed a lateral that is 63mm. A 90mm x 63mm reducing coupling connects them. No extra adapters needed.
You have a pump with a 63mm outlet. Your layflat hose is only 50mm. Use a 63mm x 50mm reducing coupling. Screw a female threaded coupling onto the pump, then attach the reducing coupling.
You are repairing a system where two different hose sizes meet. Cut out the old damaged section. Insert the reducing coupling. The repair is clean and simple.
Installation
Cut both hose ends square. The larger hose goes on the larger end. The smaller hose goes on the smaller end.
Warm the hose ends in the sun if they are stiff. Soft hose pushes on more easily.
Push the larger hose onto the larger barb. Push until it covers all the barbs. That is about 20 to 30mm. Then push the smaller hose onto the smaller barb.
Always use hose clamps on both ends. The change in diameter can create extra pressure at the joint. Our Steel Clamp Jubilee Type or Steel Clamp Seal A are good choices.
Pressure Considerations
When you reduce pipe diameter, water speeds up. That can put more stress on the smaller hose and the clamp. Make sure your clamps are tight. Check the joint after you turn on the water.
The HDPE material handles normal irrigation pressures. But the smaller hose will be the weak point. Do not exceed the pressure rating of your smaller hose.
