air-release-valve
Air Release Valve

What It Does

Air gets trapped in pipes. It happens when you first fill the system. It happens at high points along the line. Trapped air causes problems. It can create pressure surges. It can reduce water flow. It can even burst a pipe.

An air release valve lets that air escape. The valve stays open while air is present. As water rises and fills the pipe, the valve closes automatically. It seals tight and stops water from leaking out.

The same valve also lets air back in when the pipe drains. This prevents the pipe from collapsing under vacuum.

Where to Install Air Release Valves

You need valves at every high point in your pipeline. Anywhere the pipe goes up a hill, then down, install a valve at the top.

Long pipe runs with a uniform slope also need valves. Place one every 500 to 800 metres.

Install a valve at the outlet of your pump. Air often collects right after the pump. Also install valves before and after filters, meters, and pressure reducers.

If your pipe goes under a road, put a valve on both sides. Air gets trapped at the low point of the crossing.

Installation Instructions

The valve has a male thread at the base. Wrap PTFE tape around the thread. Screw it into a female threaded fitting. A tee or a saddle works well.

The valve must be installed vertically. That means pointing straight up. If you install it at an angle, it may not seal properly.

Do not bury the valve. It needs access for maintenance. Keep it above ground or in a small valve box.

How It Works Inside

The valve contains a float. When there is no water, the float sits low and the valve is open. Air escapes freely. Water enters the valve as the pipe fills. The float rises with the water. When the water level reaches the top, the float presses against a seal. The valve closes.

The valve seals at very low pressure. Even 0.2 bar is enough. That is less than 3 PSI.

Maintenance

The valve has a built in filter at the base. The filter stops debris from jamming the float. Check the filter every few months. Unscrew the valve body and rinse the filter with clean water.

If the valve leaks water, the seal may be dirty or damaged. Remove the valve, clean the seal, and test it. Replace the seal if needed.

Sizes Available

We stock four sizes. 25mm, 32mm, 50mm, and 63mm. Choose the size that matches your mainline pipe.

IrriHub provides reliable irrigation and farm systems for small and medium‑scale farmers across Kenya.
